    Britain: Very Rare Matching OBE, MID and Croix de Guerre Full Size and Miniature First & Second War Medal Group


This is a unique Great War & World War II group of 9 medals, including an OBE (2nd type), a Great War trio, and Belgian Croix de Guerre – full
size, ribbons, and miniatures – however, Gates retained his first Type MBE medal and miniature. It also includes a wealthy of supporting
material from London Gazettes and service records depicting every aspect of the career of an outstanding officer.



Major Herbert George Gates O.B.E. T.F. of the Loyal Suffolk Hussars Yeomanry Territorial Force/ Royal Engineers Motor Cyclist Corps was
born in Cambridge on January 14, 1892. Major Gates enlisted into the Loyal Suffolk Hussars T.F. on October 23 1909 and completed 4 years
with the unit on November 22, 1913. He remained in the reserves until he enlisted/transferred into the Royal Engineers on February 1, 1915.



Gates then enlisted into the Royal Engineers Motor Cycle Section at Woolwich Arsenal on February 1, 1915 at age 22. Gates was appointed
Lance Corporal on November 30, 1914. He was promoted to Sergeant the following day – December 1, 1914.



Gates transferred to the Res. Signal (Dunn’s Signal Depot) and reverted to Cpl. at his own request on April 22, 1915.



Gates was post to the B.E.F. in France on May 12, 1915 and remained there until February 21, 1916. He was appointed Acting Sergeant on July
1, 1916, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. on January 1, 1917. He transferred to the Cavalry Corps Signal Division on February 13, 1917.



Gates was promoted to Lt. on July 27, 1918 and was mentioned in despatches (MiD) on December 23, 1918 while serving with the 20th Army
Troops Coy. He was promoted to Acting Captain on February 28, 1919. This was followed by the award of the Belgian Croix de Guerre on
September 4, 1919.



On November 13, 1920 gates was promoted to Acting Major. He officially retired on April 21, 1926 and was placed on reserve territorial force
duty. He was released on July 1, 1926 retaining the rank of Major.



Major Gates was awarded the M.B.E. (military division) 1st type on July 3, 1926. Major Gates served for the Air Ministry in Malta in 1930 and
was awarded an O.B.E. (military division) 2nd type in 1937.
